These YouTubers made the absurd a reality when they put a Ferrari engine inside a DeLorean DMC-12.

The DeLorean is one of those cars that has had more success on the silver screen than on a showroom floor.

It was made iconic through the Back To The Future movie franchise, but was a dismal failure when it was first released.

Now, decades later, it’s getting a unexpected upgrade.

The team over at FuelTech were the ones who conceived of doing the switch.

They took the 4.3-liter V8 engine from a 2012 Ferrari California, as reported by hotcars.

To prepare the car for the Italian powerhouse, they installed a stronger KW suspension and larger brakes.

KW suspension refers to a suspension system (System of springs and linkages which connect a vehicle to its wheels) made by the German company KW Automotive.

This wasn’t the only adjustment they made.

To get power to the rear wheels, a Porsche 911 Tiptronic six-speed transmission was added.

The front wheels are now 16-inches whilst the rear are 17, all wrapped in Toyo Proxes tires.

This new car has way more power than the original could ever lay claim to.

Admittedly, it falls way short of this super fast Ferrari created using a pair of turbos.

How fast was the original car?

Despite Marty McFly leaving flames behind when he drove the car featured in the movie, the real-life equivalent wasn’t what we’d call a powerhouse.

With a 2.8-liter V6 engine, it could only produce around 130HP.

By way of comparison, the new and improved car with a Ferrari engine can reach up to 453HP.

Great Scott!

It’s clear to see that the producers of Back to the Future selected the car for its futuristic look, rather than any sort of prowess.

The cars used in the films had quite the interesting life after the release of the third and final film in 1990.
