It initially seemed like a forgone conclusion, but things went differently in the end.

The story behind the Buick Grand National
The Buick Grand National is special-edition model derived from the second-gen Buick Regal.
It was launched by Buick to celebrate the brand’s presence in the eponymous NASCAR Grand National Series.
This particular model, a 1987 vehicle, comes in with a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 276 horsepower, giving it a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds.
Even though it came with 50,000 miles on the clock (around 96,000km), it still cost Tyler Hoover, the guy behind the Hoovies Garage YouTube channel, $35,000.
The Buick Grand National is quite expensive these days, and hard to find in the USA, and the fact that the cheapest he could find still set him back $35,000 sort of proves it.
How the drag race with the Lamborghini Countach went
When you put ‘Lamborghini’ and ‘Buick’ in the same sentence, a lot of people would naturally assume the Lambo must be faster in any scenario.
But that’s not necessarily the case.
The truth is, old supercars can be a relatively slow, by modern standards.
In a drag race, the Countach would lose against a long list of newer cars, including the Grand National, and even longer list of modern cars.
In the drag race set up by Hoover, the Lamborghini Countach sat up behind the Grand National for the entire race.
It did manage to catch up and get closer at higher speeds, but still fell short in a quarter-mile race.
Also – as a side note – Hoover doesn’t own the Lambo because he’s recently replaced it with a Bugatti Veyron.
He bought the ‘poorest’ Bugatti Veyron in the world, and spent a fortune trying to fix it.
But at least we now know he’s got a car that – unlike the Lambo – can definitely beat the Grand National in a drag race.
