You’ll never believe the automaker Google chose as a testbed for its AI features

Volvo and Google are teaming up to bring Gemini AI features to your car.

The Swedish automaker is the first to test Google’s next-gen voice assistant in its vehicles.

It all starts with the all-electric Volvo EX90.

Revealed at Google I/O 2025, this new partnership is big, as the carmaker won’t just use Gemini; it will help shape how Android ruins in cars.

So, what exactly is Gemini AI?

Gemini is Google’s advanced conversational AI, designed to replace the traditional Google Assistant in vehicles.

In fact, Gemini AI is so revolutionary that Apple was reportedly in talks with Google to power its iPhones with the AI engine.

Unlike its predecessor, Gemini offers more natural and intuitive voice interactions, allowing drivers to engage in seamless conversations with their cars.

This enhancement aims to reduce distractions and improve the overall driving experience.

And this is where Volvo enters the picture.

The Swedish carmaker’s EX90 electric SUV will be the first vehicle to feature Gemini AI, with the integration expected later this year.

This move positions Volvo as a leader in automotive AI innovation, although it faces competition from Chinese carmakers that are already working on AI robot cars.

The partnership goes even deeper, as the carmaker will now serve as a reference hardware platform for Android Automotive OS.

That means Volvo drivers will get the newest Android AI features and updates before anyone else.

With the new tech, drivers will be able to communicate with their vehicles in a more natural and conversational manner.

Gemini also supports multiple languages, making it accessible to a broader range of users.

In addition, some of the AI features include assisting with tasks such as navigation, messaging, and accessing vehicle information, all through voice commands.

This partnership between Volvo and Google signifies a shift towards more intelligent and user-friendly in-car technologies.

However, given that Google AI reportedly uses enough electricity in one second to charge seven electric cars, automotive AI innovation may not be the best for sustainability.
