Why BMW is too busy to build a supercar

Bad news, gearheads – BMW has confirmed it won’t be creating a high-powered supercar anytime soon as it’s far too busy with other projects.

CEO Frank van Meel said that the carmaker didn’t want to ‘lose focus’ on high-performance cars but insisted that the time must be right.

Sadly, for those hoping for a new BMW supercar, the time isn’t right just now, and the marque is focusing on other projects.

It had previously been hoped that a new version of its M1 might be in the works.

Excitement grew even more when the brand unveiled its BMW Vision M Next concept car, designed to showcase what the next 10 years might look like for the carmaker.

However, it seems that the concept will remain just that, as BMW concentrates its efforts on other projects.

“We don’t want to lose focus on our high-performance cars because we do a super sports car,” van Meel told BMW Blog during a panel at the recent Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

“I must be honest; we are always dreaming about it. And maybe some day we find the right window of opportunity where we have the capacity to work on a car like that.

“And also, the company, BMW Group, says: ‘Ok, go for it.’ We never give up, I can promise you that, but actually, it’s not here yet.”

But, what is the German automaker working on that has led to its supercar plans being pushed?

Well, quite a lot, actually. It has been working away on its next-generation Neue Klasse, with the marque recently confirming the new iX3 will be the first vehicle from the range.

The Neue Klasse vehicles are reportedly gearing up to introduce a radical shift in design philosophy for BMW.

The marque has also recently unveiled its new BMW M2 CS, which comes with a powerful 530HP engine.

So, it’s safe to say the carmaker has been keeping itself busy.

And, although a supercar isn’t on the horizon right now, van Meel’s comments appear to suggest that there could be one in the future. We can always hope, right?
