Waymo, the autonomous robotaxi company owned by Google, is about to launch in three new cities.

It’s currently available in two cities in California as well as in Phoenix, Arizona, but it’s expanding quite rapidly.

The company’s growth has been exponential.

And it still feels like they’re just getting started.

As things stand, Waymo is available in Phoenix, Arizona as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco in California.

The company is expanding quite rapidly, and Waymo rides should be available in Miami, Washington D.C., and Atlanta, Georgia by 2026.

Waymo completed more than five million autonomous rides in total, with four million in 2024 alone.

At this rate, it’ll get to 10 million a lot faster than we think.

And the good news is it’ll do so by keeping roads safer in the process.

Waymo uses a combination of both radars and cameras which, according to Google, makes using an autonomous robotaxi safer than driving the car yourself.

The difference between Waymo and Tesla

Unlike Tesla, Waymo was founded as an autonomous driving technology company from the start.

By contrast, Tesla started out as a car company but it’s quickly changing its business model.

Tesla has rapidly steered, pun intended, towards self-driving technology in recent years.

The company never misses an opportunity to remind shareholders that the company is an autonomy and robotics company, not an automaker.

Something it proved by spearheading the unveiling of two robotaxies, something they did at the expense of the yet again delayed Roadster.

There’s also another huge difference, and this one is more technical.

While Waymo uses lidar and cameras, Tesla only uses cameras.

It feels entirely possible that, 10 or 20 years from now, companies that bet the house on cameras will stop and realize focusing on lidars would’ve been better.

But the exact opposite is also possible.

We’ll probably find out sooner rather than later.
