US military has started buying Tesla Cybertrucks to use for target practice

The Tesla Cybertruck is set to join the US Military, not as a support vehicle, but rather as target practice for precision missiles.

Having proven to be bulletproof, the Cybertruck could be quite an attractive vehicle to various armed forces.

But the US Military has stood by its usual fleet of expert vehicles, rather than moving towards the bulky EV.

That doesn’t mean other countries wouldn’t use them, though, and this means that the US Military needs to test how missiles react to it.

Tesla Cybertruck becomes a military target

Elon Musk has often placed the Tesla Cybertruck directly in the firing line, after the futuristic electric vehicle claimed to be completely ‘unbreakable’.

Thanks to bulletproof bodywork and armored glass – the latter of which he debunked himself in a hilarious mishap – the vehicle has always been flirting with military application.

Now, this is officially happening, but not in the way you might expect.

New documents obtained by The War Zone claim that the US Air Force Test Center (AFTC) has bought two Cybertrucks that precision-guided weapons will target.

The beefy vehicle has already been tested against full magazines of bullets, but this takes things to a new extreme.

“The intent of the training is to prep the units for operations by simulating scenarios as closely as possible to the real-world situations,” it reads.

The report also claims that ‘enemy’ forces could soon utilize the Tesla Cybertruck, among other vehicles, and that the military needs to understand how to combat it.

This also comes off the back of the Cybertruck sales hitting a worrying low. It seems like the company is pulling out all the stops to get their targets back on track, even if it means the beloved cars are now missile fodder.

Will Tesla ever get the Cybertruck into the military fleet?

While the bulky cars might just be target practice, for now, the bulletproof exterior clearly has an appeal to some government forces.

Namely, the police.

Las Vegas became the first city in the country to add a Tesla Cybertruck, or 10, to its Police Department, following in the footsteps of non-US cities like Dubai.

We’re set to see more Cybertrucks join the Police, too, with the Mexican government confirming that they are using the Tesla vehicles in law enforcement during the 2026 World Cup.

Just nothing on the military front aside from target test dummies.

But while Musk claims that there is no better car to survive an apocalypse in, there’s still some way to go before they replace the tried and trusted armed forces vehicles.
