Uber and Lucid have partnered to create a new robotaxi service to rival Tesla because they’ve been feeling a little bit left out of the driverless taxi party.

Using the Lucid Gravity SUV as their base vehicle, the two companies will use Nuros Driver Level 4 autonomous software to form their new robotaxi.

Uber used to have a robotaxi operation, but after a high-profile incident in Arizona in 2018, it ceased trading. Now, following in the wake of Waymo and Tesla’s success it seems that Uber is coming back and better than ever.

Tesla is already expanding its robotaxi operations outside of Austin, Texas into the San Francisco Bay Area, but we don’t know where the new Uber/Lucid/Nuro robotaxi will mainly be operating.

It’s no surprise that Uber wanted to get involved in the Robotaxi trend, considering Waymo and Tesla’s success with their own self-driving driverless taxis.

The incredibly popular ride-hailing app is partnering with luxury automaker Lucid to turn the Lucid Gravity SUV into a robotaxi using the Nuros Driver Level 4 Autonomous software.

The new service will be available through the current Uber ride-hailing app and services, and joins the Uber Eats system as an example of the brand’s understanding what is popular and running with it.

They’ll will be deploying 20,000+ Lucid SUVs with the Nuro AI in the next six years.

They are trying to rival Tesla

Tesla has not long launched its new robotaxi service, and it already has plans to expand it past its launch city of Austin, Texas.

Tesla’s next stop is San Francisco, following in the footsteps of Waymo which is already found in multiple cities around the United States.

Seeing Waymo and Tesla’s success, we predict that Uber-based driverless taxis are going to be very popular, considering some people really like not having to speak to a driver on the way home from a night out!
