A Toyota executive has confirmed that the Celica will be making a return.

Fans have hoped the car would make a comeback “We’re doing the Celica.”

The Celica launched all the way back in 1970 before production came to an end in 2006.

Since then, rumors about a comeback have swirled and were bolstered last October when Toyota chairman Toyoda Akio said he wanted to revive the car.

Now it looks like an eighth-generation Celica really is in the works.

Fans have hoped the car would make a comeback

Although rare, carmakers occasionally decide to revive an old favorite – much to the delight of fans.

Earlier this year, Aston Martin announced its iconic Vanquish was going back into production, while a revamped Suzuki Cappuccino is also reportedly in the works.

In a recent exchange, during a 2024 Rally Japan event, Toyoda was asked by Japan’s Best Car magazine if the long-rumored sports car will be making a comeback.

And it seems as though Toyota will be the latest marque to bring a much-loved vehicle back.

Toyoda redirected the question to Executive Vice President Yuki Nakajima, who was quick to spill the beans.

“We’re doing the Celica.”

“To be honest, there is no sign of it right now,” Nakajima said according to the publication.

“However, there are many people within the company who are eagerly awaiting the Celica. So… I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this in a public forum, but we’re doing the Celica.”

At this point, Toyoda stepped in to add a note of caution for car enthusiasts.

“Is everything okay? There are a lot of difficulties,” he’s reported as saying.

“Best Car wrote that Toyota is making the Celica, but you shouldn’t believe that.”

So it seems as though while there is a Celica on the horizon fans shouldn’t expect to be able to get their hands on one anytime soon.
