Toyota once designed five odd but fascinating secret concept cars that never got made.

Designed under the Calty brand, a design studio established by Toyota in California, these five concepts couldn’t be more different from one another.

The only thing they have in common is that no one knew anything about them until a couple of years ago.

One of them actually looks like it could be a production car.

The secret concept cars Toyota never built

These five concepts are all different, and designed for different purposes.

Four of them look like prototypes but one of them looks like a finished product, like a car you could realistically put on sale tomorrow.

The first one, pictured above, is the Baby Lunar Cruiser, an off-road vehicle that looks like a rover you can drive on Mars.

The second vehicle, which is also probably the wildest and most fascinating, is the Future High Performance Concept.

It’s a roofless, windowless speedster that’s low to the ground and long.

It looks like a futuristic Batmobile.

Then the NYC Concept, the quirky little car you see pictured below.

It looks a bit funky, but that’s because it was designed to be as compact as possible, which is also the reason why they called it the ‘NYC’ concept.

As in, a car that’s so agile you can drive it around New York City.

The Japanese automaker also designed a concept car that preceded the Prius and other energy-efficient vehicles.

This is the only prototype that doesn’t have a name, for some reason.

This prototype was all about efficiency.

They even gave it thin tires to improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag.

The one that looks ready for production

The X86D, the one you see in the image below, looks like a concept car that’s ready for production.

Created in 2012, this is a four-door shooting brake, a type of vehicle that’s becoming more popular now that the SUV frenzy is cooling down a bit.

Toyota isn’t planning a production model for this concept at the moment but automakers have extensive back catalog they regularly go back to when they’re looking for inspiration.

Earlier this year, Mercedes announced a new hypercar based on a concept everyone forgot about for 60 years.

So you never know.
