Someone on eBay is selling this 1997 Nissan Skyline R33 Nismo 400R for no less than $40,000.

You read that right, the badge is going for the same amount of money you could buy a decent car for.

So, what exactly makes it unique?

For starters, it’s a collectible from a rare JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) icon.

Collectors pay outrageous amounts of money to buy memorabilia related to super-rare vehicles.

And the stakes overwhelmingly increase when it comes to JDM cars.

The 1997 Nissan Skyline R33 Nismo 400R is one of those cars, and it’s as rare as it gets.

So rare that collectors like this Japanese car mechanic keep them in secret private collections.

Buying one would set you back by well over six figures alone — in today’s market, at least.

eBay

That’s precisely why a mere badge from he Nismo 400R has a listing price of $40,000 on eBay.

Well, $40,040, to be precise.

As The Drive discovered, the same Nissan badge is apparently also being sold on Yahoo Auctions for a much lower amount.

On this platform, it’s listed for $26,000.

So the seller might not expect to get $40,000 for it, but then again, they just might.

If sold to the right buyer, getting $40,000 wouldn’t be all that surprising.

So, what’s the story behind this collectible?

On the eBay listing, the seller mentioned that they got it pulled from the trunk of their Nissan Skyline R33 Nismo 400R back in 1996.

Since then, it’s been wrapped in a handkerchief and stored ‘properly.’

Despite these preservation measures, it has a few scratches on it.

eBay

JDM fans love their Nissans, and the Nismo 400R was a league above the rest.

Unlike the also rare R34 Skyline GT-R that you may find in several JDM collections like this one, only a handful of these ever existed.

This explains the $40,000 price tag, but is it justified?
