An American YouTuber has done the math and calculated the cost of running his Tesla Model Y EV over two years compared to his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and Honda CR-V SUV.

YouTuber John VanDeVoort has used the Model Y’s battery capacity to calculate the amount he has paid per mile each time he has charged the EV.

That has also involved working out the average mileage the Model Y can achieve from a full charge before it runs empty.

As for the results – well – stick around and you’ll find out.

The total cost for the two years is around the $2,000 mark.

The big shock, however, comes as he factors in how much his Silverado pickup and Honda CR-V SUV are to use over the same period.

The Chevy Silverado costs nearly three times as much to fill with gas.

VanDeVoort calculates the maximum battery capacity of his Model Y, which is 75kWh, to help determine the charging cost.

The YouTuber calculates he pays around $0.13c per kWh and then multiplies that by 75kWh.

Thus, it costs $9.75 to charge the Model Y’s battery from empty to full.

Using Tesla’s Watt-Hours per mile, the YouTuber can work out how much of the battery’s energy is used to move the car a mile down the road.

While this can vary depending on temperatures and road conditions, on average, the YouTuber’s Tesla uses roughly 323 Watt-hours per mile.

Dividing 75,000 watt-hours by 323 Watt-hours per mile gives us an average range of 232 miles.

With $9.75 for 232 miles of range, VanDeVoort deduces that it costs $0.042c per mile to run his Tesla Model Y.

Multiplying that by 37,500, the total number of miles covered so far in his EV, means it costs $1,575 to run the Model Y. Factoring in Tesla Superchargers brings the cost up to $2,000.

The American then calculates, using current US gas prices, the cost of fuelling the Honda CR-V and Chevy Silverado over the same period versus the Tesla.

At a cost of $3.79 per gallon, the YouTuber would pay $4,737 to fuel the CR-V and a whopping $7,896 for the Silverado.

When you also factor in the savings on car maintenance, for example, with no oil changes needed on an EV, the potential savings of owning an electric car really shine through.
