Tesla is apparently now considering a smaller pickup truck, after its hyped Tesla Cybertruck EV failed to generate enough sales.

The electric car manufacturer went all-in on the Cybertruck in 2019, but the truck has been somewhat commercially unsuccessful, with sales far below what Elon Musk and his company had hoped for.

So, the company is now considering the next move, and a smaller electric truck may be a good option.

The knowledge it has built up with the Cybertruck should come in handy if it were to produce a new vehicle.

Why has the Tesla Cybertruck been a commercial failure?

Tesla had initially planned for a production run of 250,000 units per year for the Cybertruck.

The plan was to then ramp production up to around 500,000 units a year.

This would let the company unleash the electric truck to the masses.

But in reality, the Tesla Cybertruck is selling at just 20,000 units per year, a massive disparity from the forecast.

This is despite serious attempts by the company to increase sales.

In total, the program for the truck is selling at just 10 percent of the production capacity.

The company has not yet greenlit a replacement for the Cybertruck, but it’s certainly a big possibility for the manufacturer.

Tesla is considering a smaller pickup truck

Tesla VP of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy has recently discussed the potential for a new truck, albeit on a smaller scale.

“We always talked about making a smaller pickup,” Lars said.

Moravy added: “We’ve definitely been churning in the design studio about what we might do to serve that need for sure.”

Given how sales have been for its hyped up EV truck, it would be understandable if Tesla never touched the pickup truck segment again.

However, perhaps a less polarizing design, and something closer to a Ford F-150 Lightning or Chevrolet Silverado EV, would see an upturn in sales.

Smaller trucks are still popular, too. Just look at the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger, with this even having a high-jumping Raptor version.

When Tesla nails things, it can produce an exceptional car, with plenty of range, quality, and performance.

Perhaps a smaller pickup truck and something more conventional would serve the company well?

We’ll have to wait and see.
