The Fast and the Furious star Sung Kang has teased an interesting off-screen car project he’s working on – an old Toyota AE86.

Toyota launched the AE86 back in 1983 and it soon became a big hit within the drifting community.

Production of the AE86 wrapped up in 1987, but the car remains a cultural icon to this day.

So it’s quite exciting to see Hollywood star Kang giving this one a new lease on life.

The Fast and Furious franchise helped to launch drifting cars into the mainstream.

The seemingly unending franchise kicked off in 2001 and has since spawned a bunch of sequels, a TV series, video games, and even theme park attractions.

It’s also made household names of many of its stars, including Sung Kang – who played Han Lue in the flicks.

For his role in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Kang learned how to drift but his love of cars began way before that.

In an interview with Motortrend back in 2016, Kang said that when he was a kid he would watch his neighbor restoring a 1963 Chevy Impala and pepper the elderly man with questions about the restoration project – sparking a lifelong love of cars.

Fast forward several decades, and Kang is the one doing the restoring.

In a post on Instagram earlier this month, he shared a slew of snaps of a classic red and black Toyota AE86 with the caption: “Hi Lola…”

In the shots, it’s easy to see that the poor old car has seen better days.

Its paintwork is in need of a respray, it’s missing a headlamp, and that’s before we even take a look under the hood – but that’s the whole point of a restoration project, right?

A few days after sharing his first photos of the vehicle, Kang shared a short video of himself sitting behind the wheel, flicking a few switches, and getting the car to roar into life.

With the project already well underway, we can’t wait to see how it all turns out for Kang and his vintage Toyota.
