In a recent podcast with the producer of the BBC car show Top Gear shared the behind-the-scenes experience of a lot of iconic episodes, focusing on one particularly controversial event.

The whole drama began when it became clear that one of the presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, had a controversial license plate when the trio drove through Argentina.

According to the producer, Clarkson didn’t purposely select the controversial license plate, the Porsche 928 GT actually came with it. Unfortunately, it also came with a lot of drama.

A lot of people remember the BBC’s Top Gear episode set in Argentina for all the wrong reasons. Yes, the trio of presenters had to leave the country very quickly as they were riling up the locals with a big controversy.

What would be one of the best episodes ever started with a celebration of the Latin American country’s beauty, and also the presenter’s celebration of supercars with some juicy V8 engines.

Jeremy Clarkson picked a Porsche 928 GT through an online auction. But when the supercar arrived in Argentina, it became clearer and clearer that there was a slight issue with the license plate.

Richard Porter goes behind the scenes

Top Gear stopped airing new episodes a long time ago, but producer Richard Porter discussed what it was like working behind the scenes on the popular show.

During the episode, Porter explained that, actually, the license plate blunder was a completely unfortunate coincidence.

The online auction didn’t show the plate, so the first time they saw it, they were already in Argentina.

Jeremy Clarkson’s license plate was H982 FKL, which Argentinians thought referred to the Falklands War in 1982, a significant conflict between British and Argentinian forces over the Falkland Islands.

People know the Top Gear presenters’ personalities and how they like to stir up a bit of controversy. So many viewers just assumed that Jeremy Clarkson picked the license plate on purpose.

Things got ugly very quickly for the presenters, with locals throwing stones at the Porsche and the trio having to abandon their journey and fly home to the UK earlier than planned.

Whether you believe that it was a coincidence or not, there’s no doubt that this TV moment is burned into the brains of every British gearhead.
