New York man, 96, kept Dodge Charger his wife hated in storage for 30 years, but now has big plans for it

This 96-year-old man from New York has owned a Dodge Charger for 57 years, but he kept it in storage for about 30 of those years because his wife simply hated it.

Now, he’s decided to bring it back to life.

The bad news is he won’t be able to drive it.

But he still has some big plans for it.

Peter, a 96-year-old gentleman from New York, bought this car new in 1968.

It’s a Steve McQueen era Dodge Charger, powered by a 385-horsepower, 440-cubic-inch (7.2-liter) V8.

Peter loved the car and drove it as much as he could but his wife hated it.

“According to her, it was a little louder than necessary,” he explained.

So he eventually caved in and stored it away in a garage in New York for 30 years.

When the guys from the AMMO NYC YouTube channel heard about his story, they offered to wash the car and restore it for him.

At 96, Peter can no longer drive, but he still has plans for the car.

He explained how he intends to do two things.

First, rev it up daily just for old times’ sake and second, he’s still planning a few road trips considering he’s more than happy to ride shotgun.

The Dodge Charger has been around since 1966 and it remained in production for about two decades as a two-door muscle car.

In 2006, Dodge decided to bring the Charger back after 20 years but, at the time, the automaker was also selling the Challenger, another two-door muscle car.

To avoid confusion, Dodge turned the Charger into a four-door sedan, a decision that worked out better than expected, considering how many they sold.

Then, between 2022 and 2023, Dodge discontinued the Challenger and, with a clean slate, the company once again began selling the Charger, now an electric vehicle, as a two-door coupe.

It even comes with a fake soundtrack.

Dodge

Dodge originally wanted to launch the Charger as an EV-only model, but the market wants what it wants, which is why they added a 3.0-liter V6 variant to the line-up by popular demand.

But there’s never going to be another V8 Charger.

The main reason why Dodge decided to jack the old Challenger in was because it didn’t meet emission standards in the US, let alone in other markets where emission rules were even tougher.

It’s better than nothing, but it still means the days of massive V8s with a cubic capacity well north of five or six liters are over.
