The new Toyota 2.0 liter turbo engine packs a proper powerful punch and is set to be a real game changer.
The four-cylinder engine has been ‘optimized’ for electrification putting a futuristic spin on the classic internal combustion engine.
Toyota unveiled the new engine back in May last year, saying at the time that it hoped to push towards ‘carbon neutrality’.
And it manages all of that while still packing in plenty of power – what more could you want?

The Toyota 2.0 liter turbo engine is set to be a ‘game changer’
Unveiling the engine last year, Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima hailed it as a ‘game changer’.
The next-generation powertrains will work with regular gasoline but also biofuel, hydrogen, and synthetic fuels as part of Toyota’s strategy to cover a variety of technologies.
The Toyota 2.0 liter turbo engine is being designed with hybrids in mind, but it’s predicted they will also be integrated into plug-in hybrid models in the future.
This week, Toyota dropped the new engine – dubbed G20E – into a Yaris as part of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Exhibit at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025.
The GR Yaris M Concept was kitted with the ‘ underdevelopment, midship-mounted, 2.0-liter, inline 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine’ – to create a Yaris quite unlike any other.
The new engine comes with a lot of power
The carmaker didn’t disclose the output of the engine, but speaking to Japanese reporters at the event, Vice President Hiroki Nakajima hinted that it could top 400 PS – around 394 horsepower.
When pushed on how powerful the engine actually was, Nakajima appeared to suggest there could be a bit of a surprise in store.
While this could, of course, mean that the engine in the GR Yaris M was working with a lower output, given that the marque already confirmed a 400 PS version last year, it seems more likely we could be looking at something with more horsepower.
Nakajima has also previously mentioned a lower output version of the 2.0 liter turbo engine with an output of 300 PS (296 horsepower); while an unrestricted race-car version could offer more than 600 horsepower.
Toyota has said its team is aiming to implement ‘driver-first’ car-making, which means during testing ‘cars are repeatedly driven to failure and then repaired in the extreme conditions of racing’.
The company said it will also gather feedback from ‘Morizo, professional drivers, and gentleman drivers’ which will be ‘thoroughly incorporated’.
Looks like 2025 is gearing up to be an exciting year for Toyota.
