A new report naming the most stolen car in America shows thieves are going after powerful Chevrolets more than most other brands.

Data from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) analysed theft rates for 2022 to 2024 models nationwide and found certain vehicles are stolen dozens of times more often than average.

Strong performance, high resale value and specific vulnerabilities are pushing some models to the top of the list.

One Chevrolet in particular, the Camaro ZL1, stands out as the leader, followed closely by other cars with similar traits.

Camaro ZL1’s rise to the top

The Camaro ZL1 is the high-performance version of the Chevrolet Camaro, equipped with a supercharged V8 engine and priced from around $75,400.

The standard Chevrolet Camaro also appears in the rankings, taking third place with a theft rate 13 times higher than average.

HLDI data shows that models with strong performance and steady market demand are regular targets for organised car theft.

One factor contributing to the Camaro ZL1’s theft rate is the access point built into its on-board systems.

These diagnostic ports are intended for servicing but can be exploited to bypass security.

Matt Moore from HLDI said the Camaro ZL1’s combination of desirability and vulnerability makes it a prime target for criminals.

Chevrolet’s parent company, General Motors, has issued a software update for 2020 to 2024 Camaro models to improve security and says it continues to monitor theft patterns with law enforcement.

The Acura TLX 4WD ranks second on the list, stolen at a rate 21 times higher than average.

Pickup trucks such as the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are also common targets, alongside SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade ESV and Land Rover Range Rover.

Inside the most stolen car rankings

The HLDI data shows that many of the most stolen vehicles share three factors: high value, strong performance and relative ease of access.

Pickup trucks dominate the rankings due to their popularity and the high value of their components on the resale market.

Large SUVs and performance sedans follow the same pattern, with demand in both complete and dismantled form.

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are heavily represented among the least-stolen models.

Cars such as the Tesla Model 3, Model Y and Model S are less likely to be taken because they are often kept in secure locations, require regular charging and feature advanced tracking systems.

These factors make theft more difficult and recovery more likely.

The Camaro ZL1’s status as the most stolen car in America underlines how value, performance and weaknesses in security can combine to create high theft risk.

While software updates may help, the Camaro ZL1 and other sought-after Chevrolet models are expected to remain on the radar of thieves.

Owners of these vehicles are encouraged to add extra layers of protection, from physical locks to secure parking, to reduce the risk of car theft.
