New Chinese carmaker Omoda has launched a hybrid SUV – the Omoda 9 – that costs just $58k and has almost 100 miles of electric-only range.

Omoda, a sub-division of Chery International, was established in 2022.

It has now launched into the UK market and has unveiled its flagship plug-in hybrid – the Omoda 9.

The SUV could be serious competition for the likes of the BMW X3 and the Volvo XC60 – thanks to its low price point and impressive specs.

There are some exciting vehicles coming out of China at the moment – even Ford CEO Jim Farley couldn’t help but be left seriously impressed by the $30,000 Xiaomi SU7 after driving one around for six months.

And it seems that the newly launched, Omoda, which is marketed outside of China, could be set to follow suit.

Since launching in 2022, the marque has been introduced in Russia and Kazakhstan and now has its sights set on the UK, with its Omoda 9 plug-in hybrid SUV.

The vehicle is set to land in UK dealerships next month and is priced from around $58,000 (£44,990).

Although the vehicle is set to undercut it’s rivals, that doesn’t mean it cuts corners.

“The Omoda 9 redefines hybrid SUV luxury with a true ‘everything-as-standard’ philosophy,” the company states on its website.

Created using ‘premium materials’ and crammed full of high-end features, the hybrid SUV is an impressive vehicle.

Let’s take a closer look at the SUV

The Omoda 9 comes with a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine and two electric motors, which send a combined 443 horsepower and 516lb-ft of torque through all four wheels.

The 34.4kWH battery powering the motors – from Chinese company CATL – is a little bit special.

Its creators say it is around 20 percent more energy-dense than comparable lithium-iron-phosphate batteries.

This means that it can offer up to 93 miles of electric-only driving – combined with a full tank and the marque says you’ll get up to 700 miles. Impressive, right?

The 9 also looks the part – it has a broad stance which is enhanced by 134 LED daytime running lights up the front and a large front grille.

Inside, you’ll find a 24.6-inch display sprawled across the dashboard, which is divided into an infotainment touchscreen and an instrument panel.

The car also features heated and ventilated seats, a huge sunroof, a Sony surround sound system, and double-glazed windows – making that low price point all the more impressive.
