The classic Mercedes-Benz was driven by Sir Stirling Moss and Juan-Manuel Fangio, two of the greatest drivers that Formula 1 has ever seen. It is one of the rarest F1 cars ever made.

It has sold for an astronomical sum at an auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, making history as it did so.

Yet it’s also just one of a handful of incredible cars that have sold for big bucks in 2025, with five months of the year left to run at the time of writing.

How much did the Mercedes-Benz W196R sell for?

The legendary Mercedes sold for €51,155,000 ($53,917,370) at the special auction in Germany.

This made it the most expensive F1 racing car ever, and the second most expensive car ever sold at auction.

Amazingly, it is only the third time that a car has sold for over $50 million at a public auction.

Mercedes built just 14 W196R chassis in the 1950s, and of those, only 10 have survived.

Out of those 10, just four wore the special streamlined bodywork, named Stromlinien in Germany.

The car took its power from the Mercedes M196 inline-eight engine.

Other cars have sold for big money in 2025

There are some other amazing cars that have sold for big money in 2025 so far.

One of these is the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti.

This was chassis #5893, and it sold for $36,344,960 at an auction in Paris.

The car in question won the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hours.

This was also a new auction record for a Le Mans race-winner.

Equally impressive was the 2001 Ferrari F2001 F1 car that was recently sold for big money.

Initially, this car sold for $7.5 million at a New York auction in 2017, but it has since sold for even more money.

It has set itself a personal record as the most expensive Ferrari F1 car ever, selling for $18,392,980.

It would appear that there is a big demand for classic race cars so far in 2025!
