MG cuts into premium EV space with bold prices

The MG IM5 and MG IM6 are the first models under MG’s new IM (Intelligent Mobility) brand.

Both were unveiled in Sydney as part of MG’s strategy to establish itself as a Tesla rival in the high-performance EV space.

Buyers can choose from Premium, Platinum, and Performance trims, with battery options of 75 kWh and 100 kWh.

The MG IM5 sedan offers a maximum WLTP range of 655 km, while the MG IM6 SUV delivers slightly less due to its larger size.

MG IM6

Performance variants of the MG IM5 and MG IM6 come with dual-motor all-wheel drive systems producing up to 572 kW.

The MG IM5 Performance reaches 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. Entry-level versions are powered by a single rear-mounted 217 kW motor.

Both models are equipped with four-wheel steering for improved low-speed handling, as well as a “One Touch Reverse” system that retraces the car’s last 100 meters to assist with tight parking situations.

MG IM5

Inside, the MG IM5 and MG IM6 feature a large 26.3-inch dashboard display, accompanied by a 10.5-inch secondary screen for controls and settings.

Higher trims include a sound system with up to 20 speakers.

Customers can choose between two interior trim options and five exterior colors, reflecting MG’s approach to offering straightforward customisation in its new luxury performance cars.

MG’s luxury performance cars are a direct Tesla play

The MG IM5 and MG IM6 represent a deliberate move into the premium electric vehicle market, positioning MG as a Tesla rival alongside established brands like BMW and BYD.

Previously known for models like the MG ZS EV and MG4, MG is now targeting a more competitive segment with its luxury performance cars.

Both the MG IM5 and MG IM6 are backed by a seven-year warranty when serviced through MG’s IM dealer network, a key offering aimed at building trust with new buyers.

MG IM6

Customers can order the MG IM5 and MG IM6 through MG dealerships or via the brand’s online configurator.

Deliveries are expected to begin later this year.

The success of these models will be a significant indicator of MG’s ability to compete as a Tesla rival in a segment where badge prestige and performance are major selling points.

MG’s launch of the IM5 and IM6 signals a strategic shift for the brand.

By offering luxury performance cars with competitive pricing and advanced features, MG is positioning itself as a serious Tesla rival and reshaping its identity in the global EV market.
