Mercedes teases a new V8 supercar to compete with Porsche

Mercedes-AMG has taken aim at the Porsche 911 with a new V8 supercar developed around Nürburgring benchmarks and real-world track testing.

The project will likely use the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 found in the AMG GT63, tuned specifically for sharper response and lap time performance.

It also appears to feature a new aerodynamic package, based on teaser images shared by the brand.

While full specs are still under wraps, the direction is clear and it puts this car directly in Porsche’s lane.

Internally referred to as the GT Track Sport, the model has been described by Mercedes-AMG as built for ‘absolute driving dynamic peak performance to set new standards and record times.’

That kind of phrasing, while broad, strongly suggests a Nürburgring target. The reference is no coincidence.

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS still holds the Nürburgring lap record for a production car at 6:43.3, a figure many manufacturers benchmark against.

Mercedes-AMG came close with its GT Black Series, which clocked a 6:48.0.

The new V8 supercar appears to pick up where that model left off.

Visible details include a swan-neck rear wing, an extended front splitter, and wide, road-legal tires.

The wheel design uses a conventional five-lug setup instead of Porsche’s centre-lock system, pointing to a road-based platform with racing upgrades, not a full race-derived build.

Power is expected to come from the same V8 used in the AMG GT63, although likely reworked for higher performance.

No hybrid assistance has been confirmed, keeping attention on the combustion engine.

That makes the GT Track Sport one of the few remaining cars of its kind being developed in 2025.

With the Porsche 911 continuing to dominate the segment, Mercedes-AMG is aiming to re-establish itself at the sharp end with a focused, track-capable V8 supercar.

The GT Track Sport follows a series of high-profile EV projects from Mercedes-AMG, including the electric GT XX concept, which debuted with over 750kW from dual motors.

However, the new V8 supercar confirms that combustion development is still part of the brand’s roadmap.

It highlights a dual strategy, with AMG continuing to build electric models while refining its existing V8 platform.

AMG CEO Michael Schiebe has publicly praised the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, calling it “the best V8 we have ever developed”.

That perspective reinforces the brand’s commitment to getting as much as possible from the engine before any potential phase-out.

The V8 supercar project makes that point clear through both its design and its performance goals.

With Nürburgring performance, a clear Porsche 911 rival in its sights, and no shift to electrification, the GT Track Sport represents Mercedes-AMG’s most committed return to combustion-focused performance in years.

No production timeline has been confirmed, but the intent behind the car is already drawing comparisons.

If executed properly, this V8 supercar may be the closest Mercedes-AMG has come to disrupting Porsche’s long-standing dominance.
