Launched in 1979, the auto was celebrated for its timlessness in a rather unique way.

There’s an important symbolism behind the amber sculpture.

But just how long did such a huge piece of art take to build?

Mercedes-Benz has created a cool fleet of cars

From daily drivers to luxury vehicles, you name it, Mercedes has it. From sleek supercars like the AMG-ONE to the luxury of a Maybach, the marque has something for everyone.

There’s even an off-road Mercedes RV that takes glamping to the next level.

Plus, it even made a custom wheelchair for a rescue dog, Bunny, who lost her hind legs in an accident.

This concept created by the brand is unique, too – and it’s all to celebrate the G-Class.

Yup, the off-roader first graced our all-terrain adventures in 1979, and hasn’t really changed much since. It’s still rugged, reliable, and luxurious.

So, to celebrate a new release of the vehicle, Mercedes decided to pull off a big act – by submerging one from the first production year in amber, a 280 GE to be exact.

It all happened at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and the work of art took a whopping 90 days to make from 44.4 tonnes of synthetic resin.

It measured 3.10 metres high, 2.55 metres wide and 5.50 metres long – so it was definitely no mean feat for the masterminds behind the project.

It was one big symbol

So why go to all this incredible effort to celebrate the G-class OG?

“The installation symbolizes the timelessness of the off-road legend and makes a conscious reference to the natural phenomenon of insects preserved in amber,” said Mercedes-Benz itself.

Furthermore, similar to how DNA is passed down, features from the first ever G-Class have also travelled through time to the latest version, making it an ultimate classic in the car world.

With this work of art, the idea behind it was to capture the essence of driving off-road in natural surroundings, like an insect in amber, millions of years before our time on earth.

Clever when you think of it that way, right?

If the amber sculpture has gripped your attention and you’re wondering about securing one for yourself, look no further.

The 2025 version will set you back at least $149,400 – so be prepared to part with some serious cash.

But who knows, if you wanted to preserve the squeaky-clean tech and shiny exterior, maybe you could preserve it in your own block of resin?

The world is your oyster.

Make sure you check out the amber in action at the top of the page.
