While Mazda’s electric vehicle, the MX‑30, hasn’t been a huge hit, the brand’s hybrids have been, and the CX range has proved its worth in gold.

But there’s also the underlying cornerstone that is the iconic sports car Miata (MX-5) to contend with.

And Mazda has now outlined its plans to work on both ranges.

Mazda doubles down on its plug-in hybrid and electric range

Mazda has had quite the image revitalization in the last few years, becoming almost unrecognizable from what it used to be, thanks to an impressive range of SUVs.

Mazda revealed that its sales have increased 2.6 percent in the last half-year, through Q1 and Q2 of 2025, reaching 636,968 units sold worldwide.

But it’s not resting on its laurels.

Adding to the successful CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90 plug-in hybrid models, the CX-5 is expected to be released in 2027, boasting a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-Z engine and its in-house motors.

The electric range, however, has not been as successful for the brand.

Holding just a 117-mile range, the MX has now been discontinued to make way for a new range.

Having already launched joint ventures with Chinese automaker Changan to launch the EZ-60 in China with resounding success, the Japanese brand is making its first in-house EV.

Details on the in-house EV are scarce, but the brand is reported to be eyeing a 2027 debut and to hit the US by 2028.

The Chinese-collaborated Mazda 6e and the CX-6e are also planned to be hitting Europe and Australia this year.

New Mazda sports cars could be on the way

The Miata is very much the bread and butter for Mazda, and the brand appears keen to stay true to its roots with more sports cars.

As a throwback to its flagship model, the Iconic SP concept, first revealed at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, could be coming to fruition.

Equally, patents have previously alluded to an electric Miata being on the way, but the brand faces problems in making it lightweight, having previously claimed batteries are too heavy.

The next few years could be crucial for the Japanese manufacturer, really giving the electric era a crack after only dipping a tire in so far.
