A free car but it came with a cost… of not running smoothly

YouTuber Waldo’s World found himself acquiring a Mercedes GL450 for free.

If it was able to be fixed by his own hands, it was his – that was the deal.

Before ending up in his hands, two previous mechanics noted that it needed a new engine.

So, he decided to get his hands dirty and see if this was the case.

To buy new, the 2013 Mercedes GL450 started at $64,805.

It had a 362 horsepower engine and a 26.40 gallon fuel tank capacity.

But, the engine on this Mercedes was where all of the problems stemmed from.

Waldo’s World

Upon firing the car up, Waldo received two codes for a cylinder five misfire.

After more investigation, the issue looked fuel related.

Next, the injector wires were seen to – with some damage noticed by the ever-savvy Waldo.

So, liquid electrical tape was used to repair the jacket.

Could a a new ECU be the answer to make the Mercedes feel brand new?

But, things took a turn when he found a faulty ECU.

After ordering a replacement, he replaced a new injector while waiting for the delivery.

And, as luck would have it, the engine started however it wasn’t smooth just yet.

For the next amendment, he cloned the ECU and miraculously – our intrepid restorer claimed – ‘it really fixed the issue’.

However, to be on the safe side he installed ‘sacrificial wiring harnesses’ to prevent oil from reaching the new and improved ECU.

Thanks to his pure patience and determination to set the Mercedes up for greatness again, Waldo was successful.

Not bad for a free SUV really is it?
