Man who bought $1.6M McLaren P1 from Harrods reveals wild ownership costs

The UK man who bought a McLaren P1 from the London superstore Harrods has now revealed just how many thousands of pounds he needs to have spare to cover the wild ownership costs.

While supercars obviously don’t come cheap, there is much more to consider than just the flat fee.

In this case, the $1.6m tag that was dangling over the floppy ears of a McLaren P1 was just the beginning of the expenditure.

Former racing world champion turned content creator Mark McCann recently purchased this P1 from the world’s most luxurious department store. But the hefty fees have followed him 200 miles back home.

Harrods – Macy’s on steroids – recently gave a ground-floor store to a supercar dealership, where a Pagani Huayra, a LaFerrari, and a McLaren P1 stole the show in a $6m display of carbon fiber.

The latter of these was recently purchased by Manchester-based supercar fanatic Mark McCann for £1.2m ($1.6m).

The Harrods McLaren P1 was given a new look, changing the orange hue for satin black. And then swapped out the stock wheels for a meaner set.

But he immediately faced some woes, as it turned out that a regular issue with the P1 was the depletion of the $130k battery.

Despite that now being resolved, McCann has taken to YouTube to detail every expense for his McLaren P1. And it’s safe to say that his wallet won’t be comfy for long.

Mark McCann

Supercars are extraordinarily expensive to maintain, and the McLaren P1 is no different.

Straight off the bat, the new P1 owner will need to cough up $9k a year for its service.

The real kick in the teeth, though, is the insurance. McCann revealed that he tied into an insurance agreement for a whopping $15,000 a year.

That may seem reasonable for a hypercar. Let’s consider that as 0.005 percent of the costs, which is actually akin to having a $20k Tesla Model 3 and paying $1 a year…

But it also comes with a catch – a $50k excess catch.

With the unorthodox car, the insurance fee is simply to make it road-legal. But the new owner will have to pay $50k should he want to claim damages.

Still, this is nothing on what it could cost if he bypassed the insurance and went to a garage.

A McLaren P1 door is worth $80k alone. While the front splitter comes in at $40k, the rear clamshell at $130k, and this is all just bodywork.

One accident, and that $50k excess suddenly looks quite appealing.

Mark McCann

With a 10-year estimation of his maintenance costs broken down to yearly payments, he figured that the car would cost $13k a year to stay fit and healthy.

All in all, he claims the McLaren P1 costs $47k a year to run, taking servicing, insurance, general maintenance, and 10-year maintenance fees into consideration.
