Filling up a hydrogen car sounds pretty simple.

But would you know how to do it if it came to it?

Since hydrogen cars aren’t as common as regular gas-powered cars or even EVs, most of us have no idea how they’re fueled up.

Thankfully, YouTuber Forrest Jones is here to satisfy our curiosity and show us exactly how these futuristic vehicles get refueled.

A closer look at how a hydrogen car is filled up

To start with, you need to remove the dust cap on the car. That’s where the nozzle goes.

Then, you grab the hydrogen nozzle and carefully insert it into the car’s intake.

Once the nozzle is in, you swipe your card at the pump and then press a button where the nozzle rests.

This gets the fueling process started.

A screen on the machine shows you how much the car is getting filled up.

Forrest said the pressure inside the tank could reach up to 700 bar, or roughly 10,000PSI.

That’s a lot of pressure, but the system is built to handle it.

“Now we are filling up; it’s telling me my bar right there. We’re at 532 bar, this can go up to 700 bar which is basically over 10,000 PSI,” he said.

When you’re done, all you need to do is press a button on the nozzle to release it and then pull it out. And that’s it – your hydrogen car is fueled and ready to go.

‘Hydrogen stations are rare’

The video, posted by Forrest on his YouTube channel, Forrest’s Auto Reviews, had people talking.

One viewer pointed out that hydrogen stations were rare, saying, ‘there are like 2 hydrogen stations in the entire country’.

Another person expressed concern about the high pressure, saying, ‘10,000 PSI – I hope the tank has a safety shield!’

And a third person wondered about the cost, asking: “how expensive is it to fill up? It must be a lot.”

As eco-friendly cars like the Toyota Mirai and the NamX SUV gain popularity, videos like this one are incredibly useful for anyone considering making the switch to hydrogen-powered vehicles.
