When you have an EV, you’re constantly looking for new cheap ways to charge it, like this man who added a solar roof to his Tesla Model 3 to see if he could charge his car for free – and the shocking thing is, it actually worked.
Did it work well? In a word, no. But using a transportable solar panel system called Blue Eddy, this guy could prove that a solar-powered EV can charge while it’s driving.
His main problem was the fact that the sun’s positions and the different shadows changed how well his Tesla EV could charge.
While it was a technically successful experiment, there are definitely situations that could be better suited to a portable solar panel system.

We’ve all come up with harebrained schemes to try and save money in our time, so this man shouldn’t be judged for trying to save money while charging his Tesla Model 3.
The YouTuber installed a solar roof on his EV using a portable solar system called ‘Blue Eddy’ to see if it was possible to charge an EV while you’re on the go.
The portable 120W solar panels were connected to the EV via a 2kWh AC200P power station, but were quite ineffective.
Even a small amount of shade was shown to dramatically reduce charging capacity, and it meant that the YouTuber had to keep moving his car for optimal charging.
Could he charge his car for free?
While the experiment did work, the charging only yielded seven miles of range, what with the constant moving, which averaged out to probably only one mile of range per hour in good sunlight.
It seems ‘Blue Eddy’ solar roofs are useful, but not very practical or efficient, maybe better for camping or living a van life.
He probably saved himself 50 cents for the whole day, so this would be a great solution if you want to save nickels upon nickels.
