His wife accused him of loving the car more than her – so it was sitting abandoned for five years in an attempt to prove his devotion.

However, post-divorce he’s finally having the Ford Maverick Coupe cleaned up and restored.

The strange love story

After his wife accused the owner of spoiling the car and loving it more than her, he abandoned it as a grand gesture of his affection for her.

She almost sold it to a stranger for $5,000 without ever knowing the real value.

But post-divorce, he’s making efforts to get the Ford Maverick back to its former glory of the 1970s.

Consider it a ‘revenge restoration’.

Hey, we might not like to admit it, but revenge can be a great motivator.

The Ford Maverick Coupe

Ford manufactured the two-door model during the period to replace their iconic Falcon.

Its name suggests its free spirit, with the logo stylized to echo the head of Longhorn cattle.

This includes the long hood and fastback roof that made Ford Mustang so popular.

And you can check out the new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD’s interior here – it’s like being in a cockpit.

Want more? This Ford Mustang can even transform into a boat.

Back to this four-door Ford Maverick sedan with pop-out rear side windows, it was first brought to market in 1971.

A near record-breaking 579,000 rolled off the production line within the first 12 months – it even out outsold the Mustang.

This is one of the 2.1 million total units that Ford procuded with the last being made in 1977 to make froom for the Fairmont.

Its popularity can be attributed to rising gas prices and a modest starting price of $1,995.

This figure would equate to a mere $16,000 today.

And with a Ford V-Eight engine making two hundred horsepower – that’s not a bad deal.

The restoration

After rolling it out of storage, the owner took it straight to Percepcar USA detailing shop – and they shared the transformation on their YouTube channel.

Despite a solid layer of dust – the car isn’t in bad shape after a power wash and a polish reveals a shade of ‘Original Cinnamon’ and chrome trim beneath.

Inside, the brown leather seats were removed to allow for a better clean on the upholstery and vacuuming the still-intact carpet with original Ford-branded floor mats.

Beneath the hood, the Ford Maverick coupe is powered by a 302-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) V8 Windsor engine, boasting 215 horsepower (210 metric horsepower).

It’s thought to be worth roughly $40,000 today at auction – although the owner is hoping for a figure closer to $50,000 post the $1,000 restoration.

Turns out love does have a price after all.
