A Koenigsegg Agera RST took on a Tesla Model X Plaid in a drag race with some interesting results.

Drag races are a great way to get a true feel for how cars perform against each other in real life rather than on paper.

You’ll often come across what appears to be a surprising pairing of vehicles pitted against each other – such as this race between a $4.5 million Koenigsegg supercar and an all-electric Tesla SUV.

However, what’s even more surprising is how the race turned out.

How the Koenigsegg Agera RST and Tesla Model X Plaid compare

Considered one of the most powerful and fastest production cars in the world, the Koenigsegg Agera RST comes with a 5.0 liter V8 that can produce up to 1,360 horsepower and 1,158 lb-ft of torque.

The hypercar was designed and built to smash records and has a neck-breaking top speed of 278mph.

Mat Watson from the Carwow YouTube channel decided to put this record-breaker up against a Model X Plaid in a drag race.

The Tesla Model X Plaid is a, somewhat unlikely, formidable opponent – you can see for yourself what happened when it took on both a Ferrari and McLaren at the same time.

“With the most power and quickest acceleration of any SUV, Model X Plaid is the highest performing SUV ever built,” Tesla promises.

What the means is, while it may look like a family-friendly SUV don’t underestimate its power –  its trio of motors can produce an impressive 1,020 horsepower and it can do 0-6mph (0-96km/h) in just 2.5 seconds.

How did the drag race go?

The two cars did three valid quarter-mile races – and, we’ll be honest, the results were quite surprising.

Despite weighing around a ton more than its opponent, the Tesla Model Plaid X sped ahead of the Koenigsegg from a standing start, with the hypercar only catching up towards the end of each race.

One race, with the Koenigsegg Agera RST in ‘boost’ mode, did see the hypercar take the lead and it performed better for braking.

But in the best run, the two cars finished neck and neck at 10.2 seconds in the standing quarter mile.

Who’d have thought a humble all-electric SUV could comfortably keep pace with a $4.5 million hypercar?
