Kenya’s first EV has been revealed for locals to see, as it is set to take on one of the world’s toughest off-road events.
Team EV Explorers were the ones to create the zero-emissions vehicle, set to compete in the Rhino Charge later this year.
The Rhino Charge is an annual off-road motorsport event which raises money for rhino conservation efforts.
But it also puts trucks to the test on power and endurance in the roughest of Kenya’s landscapes.

Kenya’s first EV is unveiled
EVs are the new frontier in cars, and everybody is getting in on the action.
Tesla has been around for a long while now, but it has plenty of competitors biting at its heels.
There’s BYD, which made headlines for its massive factory in China, and there’s also Li Auto, being hailed as the ‘best EV [Americans] can’t buy’.
Even Jeff Bezos is investing in the industry – a Michigan based start-up making $25k pickups, to be exact.
And now a Kenyan company is joining the mix, in what is a first for the African country.
EV Explorers will be the first team to enter the Rhino Charge in an EV.
This will be the first electric entry in the Rhino Charge’s 35-year history.
In a video showing its unveiling, attendees are seen clapping and smiling as the jeep comes into view.
In a nod to its heritage, the car is adorned in the colors of the Kenyan flag – green and red.
Making a debut in one of the world’s toughest off-road events
And as if the warm reception wasn’t enough, it’s set to make its driving debut in the Rhino Charge.
The Charge is an annual event held every year by the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust.
Since it was formed, the event has raised over $18.56 million, which has gone towards the ‘conservation and protection of Kenya’s mountain range ecosystems’.
According to the charity’s website, 65 cars are set to participate in this year’s event, which has 13 checkpoints and a whole lot of bumps along the way.
The Charge is set to take place on May 31st.
Hopefully the EV does well, and this encourages other participants to go electric in the years to come.
