June 22, 2025, is now officially the busiest air travel day on record in the States, surpassing a record set last year.

It’s been a bumper year in general for travel in the US.

According to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), eight of the 10 busiest days in its history have come this year.

Ahead of the July 4 weekend, travelers were warned that a record-breaking 61 million drivers were set to take to the roads.

But it’s not just the roads that saw a boost, as the TSA has confirmed more than three million people passed through American airports on Sunday, June 22, marking the single busiest day for travel in the agency’s history.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport

Precisely  3,097,633 flight passengers passed through TSA checkpoints, which was enough to smash the previous record of 3,088,836 on December 1, 2024.

June 27 and June 29 also made their way into the top ten busiest ever days for travel, holding the seventh and eighth place respectively.

June 22 was also a record-breaker when it came to the most people screened on a single day, after the TSA at Chicago O’Hare International Airport screened just shy of 114,000 individuals.

“On our busiest days, our officers remain laser-focused on delivering a safe and efficient screening experience to all passengers traveling through our airports,” TSA Illinois Federal Security Director Jim Spriggs said.

What’s bring in the surge in travel?

Explaining what helped to boost the surge in travel, Keith Jeffries, the former federal security director at Los Angeles International Airport, told ABC there were a couple of factors.

“Airlines are offering great deals, and with Fourth of July falling on a Friday this year, it extends the weekend for many folks,” he said.

“People are out of school, and they’re going to enjoy themselves this summer.”

He also said it was ‘testament to how well the economy is doing in the US’ as more people were traveling.

Looking ahead, he believes that the trend in growth won’t be going away.

“We’ve seen steady year-over-year growth of three to five percent on average, with some American airports experiencing even more significant increases based on population growth in certain cities.”
