An Indian physician bought his 16-year-old son a 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, only for him to trade it in for a Volkswagen.

The 1969 Shelby GT500 is one of the ultimate versions of the Mustang, and one that many muscle car enthusiasts would love to own.

So you can only imagine the surprise on the owner’s face when his son decided he didn’t want to continue owning his very special present.

The car is now back for sale on a classic car dealer’s website, with it looking for a new home and someone who can get it back to its former glory.

What happened to this 1969 Shelby GT500

This particular car was originally bought by a Volkswagen dealer in the 1960s.

It was then sold on to a gentleman in 1969.

Despite having just 2,400 miles on the clock, the muscle car’s new owner didn’t add much to that figure.

The car was soon parked, and it was last registered in 1976.

The Mustang spent much of the intervening time partially parked in a shed.

The rear section, in particular, was badly exposed to the elements.

It resurfaced in Indianapolis, Indiana, the home of the Indy 500.

That is when the physician spotted it and bought it as a gift for his son.

Why the son traded in the Ford Mustang

For whatever reason, the 16-year-old didn’t fancy restoring the car.

Nor, it would appear, did they want a car with performance DNA, hence the decision to trade it in for a VW.

Eventually, it found its way to Tanner’s Classic and Performance Motors via Facebook Marketplace.

Not long after that, the car appeared for sale on their website, but it did come with some words of warning.

The seller states it should be thoroughly inspected, as it’s believed to have not been started for over 20 years.

Under the hood, it has a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 engine, and it is in a Pastel Gray.

The Marti report with the car confirms that the Shelby GT500 is one of just 129 cars to leave the Shelby factory in this paint color.

It is also one of only 128 to have had the same paint and trim codes.

Whoever does take this particular Ford Mustang on will have a very rare beast to restore and enjoy.
