Huawei creates patent for battery that offers nearly 2,000-mile driving range and 5-minute charging time

Huawei has created a patent for an EV battery that comes with nearly 2,000 miles of driving range and a rapid, five-minute charging time.

The Chinese tech company is looking to be at the forefront of the coming EV battery revolution.

It’s no secret that car batteries are a constantly evolving science, and different companies are looking to make their mark.

This really could be a game changer, as it’s set to have an energy density two to three times that of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

You don’t need us to tell you that EVs are big business at the moment, whether it be Tesla or BYD dominating the market.

And with this rising tide of electric cars comes the pivotal question – how will we power them?

Different companies are researching ways to make electric car batteries more efficient, both in terms of mileage and in charging time.

For instance, a British EV battery was being touted as rechargeable within a mere 18 seconds. And researchers in China are working on an ultra-light battery.

Ultimately, what drivers want is pretty straightforward – a battery that charges quickly and lasts longer.

Huawei is also throwing itself into the technology race, as it recently created a patent for a sulfide-based solid-state battery.

It’s reportedly capable of driving ranges of up to 2,000 miles and ultra-fast charging in five minutes.

The battery is set to have energy densities between 400 and 500Wh/kg. That’s two to three times higher than a conventional battery, CarNewsChina reports.

Huawei isn’t the only Chinese company making moves on the solid-state battery research front, though.

Other companies exploring solid-state batteries include BYD and Xiaomi.

It’s easy to see why once we consider that this high-cost component can make up more than half of an electric car’s production cost.

However, this exciting development should be treated with a pinch of salt.

Experts have warned that the impressive figures cited around charging times remain purely hypothetical at this point.

For a start, the charging infrastructure required is not yet commercially available.

However, this has gotten people talking and revived interest in battery technology, particularly among rival companies in South Korea and Japan.

Companies like Toyota, Panasonic, and Samsung have long been funding research into solid-state batteries.

Chinese companies have now caught up, though, with public data indicating that they filed more than 7,600 patents for solid-state batteries.

That’s 36.7 percent of global activity, for those keeping track.

We don’t know for sure what the future holds, but it’s going to be interesting.
