A grandfather in China turned down $200,000 to abandon his house, so the city built a huge highway around it instead.
Over the years, we have seen several stories of people refusing to leave their homes. This is despite being offered considerable compensation so that construction work can begin.
However, Chinese grandfather Huang Ping took it to another level, turning down over $200k to move from his home and make room for a new highway.
Rather than force him out of his house, authorities decided to simply build around it so that Ping could still live there.

Authorities simply built around the house
The house is located just southwest of Shanghai in Jinxi, and it currently sits between the highway’s infrastructure.
Despite the offer of money, Ping did not want to leave his home and simply refused to move.
That led to the massive highway being built around him and his property.
The house sits within a massive hole in the middle of the highway, surrounded by the new road.
For Ping to get to and from his house, authorities had to build a massive tunnel that runs under the road.
A video on Reddit shows the house in question, as well as the huge tunnel that allows Mr Ping to get to his home.
Why the Grandfather decided not to abandon his house
Ping had lived at his home for years and currently shares the house with his 11-year-old grandson.
The grandfather had rejected three alternative properties for relocation, having become too attached to his current home.
Despite being so attached to his home, Ping is beginning to regret the move.
He said to Metro that if he could turn back time, he would ‘agree to the demolition conditions.’

He now fears the constant noise from cars will be too much when the highway opens in the Spring of 2025.
Locals have flocked to the house to photograph it and have been fascinated by the story from its owner.
It does, however, look like staying there was more trouble than it will be worth.
Hopefully, this grandfather doesn’t come to regret not taking the money and moving on.
