General Motors (GM) has committed to making two million vehicles a year in the US and has said it stump up $4 million to it happen.

GM is the largest car manufacturer in the United States and owns brands including Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac.

The US carmaker has announced plans to plow around $4 billion into its domestic manufacturing plants to boost production.

The automaker says the plants will produce both gas and electric vehicles.

The news comes hot on the heels of GM’s recent announcement that it would be pouring $888 million into its Tonawanda Propulsion Plant in New York to build a next-generation V8 engine.

The New York plant will produce the sixth generation of GM’s iconic Small Block V8 engines for trucks and SUVs.

The move was seen as a sharp turn from the carmakers’ previously announced plans to build EVs at the plant.

However, General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra said while the company remains committed to an all-electric light-duty vehicle lineup by 2035, it will remain ‘responsive to where the customer is.’

In an announcement on June 10, the company said its planned $4bn investment will give it the ability to assemble more than two million vehicles per year in the States, both ICE-powered and all-electric.

“We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,” said Barra.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the US and to support American jobs. We’re focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.”

General Motors

In total, GM has around 50 facilities in the US, but the ones located in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee will benefit the most from the new investment.

In a press release, GM said the Fairfax Assembly in Kansas will support production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning mid-2027 and will start building the new Chevrolet Bolt EV from the end of this year.

GM’s Orion Assembly plant in Michigan will pick up production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks in early 2027, which will leave the Detroit-Hamtramck free to cover production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and GMC Hummer EV.

And, its Spring Hill facility in Tennessee, will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer, the Cadillac LYRIQ and VISTIQ EVs, and the Cadillac XT5 in 2027.

So it seems that there are big things ahead for the carmaker.
