Glenn Howerton admitted that his Tesla getting stuck in a parking lot for days inspired an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Howerton co-developed It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the long-running sitcom – and he also appears as Dennis Reynolds in the show.

In the episode Dennis Takes A Mental Health Day, Reynolds is put through a lot of stressful situations, including one with an electric car.

This was inspired by a run-in that Howerton had with his Tesla Model X while on a weekend trip.

Speaking on his podcast back in 2023, Glenn Howerton opened up about how his weekend away had been derailed.

“I drive a Tesla. I drive a Tesla Model X. Okay, the key fob stopped working on my car,” the American actor said.

“I park on the bottom floor of the parking garage.

“For the app to work, you need to have an internet connection – on your phone and the car.”

He wasn’t too happy with the customer service he received either, describing it as being ‘tossed’ from specialist to specialist.

“I’ve been a Tesla customer for 10 years,” he fumed.

“You lost a customer today. This is f***ed up.”

But fortunately, he was able to make the best of it – and incorporated the scene into the episode Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day.

In the episode, Howerton’s character decides to take it easy after discovering he has high blood pressure.

But that’s easier said than done when his ‘Tsuma’ EV car begins acting up.

This Tsuma wasn’t playing ball

The Tsuma is an obvious stand-in for Tesla, and the struggles that Reynolds faces are much like what his actor went through.

His app won’t connect to the car, leaving him locked out of the vehicle.

Reynolds’ efforts to get through to customer service eat up hours of his time and leave him aggravated beyond belief.

It doesn’t sound like much of a mental health day, does it?

This episode aired back in 2023, so it appears that Howerton might have been ahead of the curve in airing his frustrations with the company.

In recent weeks, it’s been getting into hot water over in California, where the DMV is looking to ban sales of its vehicles and where customers are shopping elsewhere.
