After nearly 50 years at the top, the Ford F-150 pickup truck is no longer the best-selling vehicle in the United States.

No vehicle has been able to dethrone the F-150 in 47 years, and since the first F-Series was introduced 77 years ago, Ford has sold more than 41 million examples of the truck.

However, with the market shifting towards SUVs, EVs, and more economical vehicles, Ford’s long-standing pickup has been toppled.

A car from rival Toyota now holds the title of best-selling vehicle in North America.

Toyota’s RAV4 beat the Ford F-150 in the United States

A study from Jato Dynamics has revealed that the Toyota RAV4 has displaced the Ford F-150 as the best-selling car in the USA.

For some time, the Toyota SUV has been a runner-up, but the market has now shifted in favor of SUVs like the RAV4.

Hybrid powertrains will have boosted the RAV4’s sales, as did the fact that F-150 sales dropped five percent to 460,915 units sold in 2024.

Conversely, RAV4 sales went up by nine percent, with Toyota selling 474,193 units last year.

The RAV4 has consistently been the best-selling SUV in the United States and has only fallen short of the Ford pickup during that run.

However, while F-150 sales are still going strong, the RAV4’s jump in order could be a sign that pickup trucks are starting to lose favor with consumers, albeit slowly.

Honda’s CR-V rounded out the top-three

The Honda CR-V SUV finished third and rounded out the ‘podium’ on the list.

While still some way behind Ford and Toyota in sales, the CR-V saw a sales increase of 11 percent.

The Japanese manufacturer sold 402,791 CR-Vs across 2024.

That is a very impressive achievement, particularly as it beat the world’s current best-selling car, the Tesla Model Y.

Tesla’s Model Y sales have actually decreased by three percent over the past year, with the EV manufacturer selling 372,613 units in 2024.

Rounding out the bottom of the top 10 was the GMC Sierra 1500.

With stiff competition in the pickup segment, the Sierra was behind both the F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

GMC sold 216,248 units of its pickup, an increase of 11 percent compared to 2023.
