Cars are parked on ground level before being lowered or raised, like a vending machine.

It’s certainly a great way to save space.

But there’s at least one catch – maybe two – that we can think of.

This parking system makes a clever use of space

The clip – which you can see below – was shared to Instagram by a creator who goes by Shanghai.dre.

The system looks and works like a vending machine, and it’s obviously a clever way to save space because you can have 10 cars occupying the same amount of space, horizontally, of just one.

In a way, that’s the part of the reason why so many countries love skyscrapers, expanding real estate space vertically rather than horizontally.

But there are a couple of issues we can think of.

First, as some people in the post comments pointed out, this is not exactly new.

Keen Fast & Furious fans will remember that a similar system (below) was already showcased in the 2006 movie Tokyo Drift.

That was in Japan, not China, but the concept behind it was almost the same, with cars being raised up when parked, and then rotated back down on ground level when the owner wanted to drive away in them.

Second, it is clever, but it seems a bit slow.

It looks like you might have to wait a long time if your car happens to be parked at the top.

The number of cars on the road is constantly rising, but the world isn’t getting any larger, so finding ways to build new car parks is becoming a bit of a challenge.

And there’s another problem on top of that, because cars are also getting too big.

In order to fix these two problems, people are coming up with original and unusual solutions, such as underwater garages.

There’s a villa in Dubai with an underwater garage large enough for dozens of cars.

There’s also another one in Amsterdam designed specifically for thousands of bicycles (above).
