Flight attendant explains why your first response is very important when they say ‘hello’ as you get onto a flight

A Wizz Air flight attendant has explained why they say ‘hello’ to you when you first board your flight – and it’s not just about being polite.

If you think back to the last time you boarded a plane, you can probably remember being greeted by a smiling flight attendant as you climbed aboard.

While it is a nice welcome to the start of your journey, it also serves an important purpose.

And it turns out that your response is equally as important.

How you respond to the flight attendant is important

Frequent fliers are always keen to pick up a handy travel hack that can save time or money… or both.

Like this simple way to rack up Air Miles without any extra effort.

Or Wizz Air flight attendant Iona Iachim, who has shared the importance of responding when boarding a flight.

When you get on a plane, you’ll come face to face with a smiling flight attendant who will welcome you aboard.

They can also take a quick glance at your boarding pass and help point out where your seat is, but there’s an even more important part of the greeting process.

The flight attendants are checking your response to see if you’re unwell or if you’ve had too much to drink.

“Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness?” Iachim asked in a clip shared on TikTok.

The Wizz Air worker went on to explain that the greeting was a great opportunity to ‘check whether or not you are too drunk or sick to fly’.

While plenty of folks will enjoy a drink before boarding, being drunk during your flight can present a safety risk.

In certain circumstances, if passengers have had too much to drink, they could be turned away from the flight, because if they do manage to make it onboard, and they’re too sick, it could lead to the flight being redirected.

So, flight attendants are always on the lookout to make sure this doesn’t happen.

That’s not the only reason for the greeting

While scoping out whether passengers are potentially too unwell or inebriated to fly, a fellow flight attendant has also revealed another reason for their greeting.

A flight attendant called Rania, has previously revealed that staff are also looking for people who could potentially help out in case of an emergency.

She said they are training to look out for ‘ABPs’ (able-bodied persons), who can help if there’s an emergency, as well as military personnel, pilots, doctors and nurses.

So it seems there’s a lot more to ‘hello’ than you might have thought.
