Pilots: It’s a high-flying career

It’s no secret that pilots are pretty talented people

They manage to navigate choppy winds and land huge aircraft daily.

One skilled captain even managed to land his plane at one of the most dangerous airports in the world, right on the edge of a ski slope.

Plus, another pilot who survived the Bermuda Triangle and described ‘jumping’ miles.

This pair of pilots, though, might make your heart soar to new heights.

The photo that started it all

Southwest Airlines

This father-and-son duo took a photo together 30 years ago. And, after completing a high-flying career in the sky, Southwest Airlines Captain Ruben Flowers retired after 31 years.

But not before flying his very last flight next to his son, with other family members – including his cousin and brother – in tow for the ride.

It seems that flying is a family affair too, as Captain Flowers’ other children are pilots, following in their father’s footsteps.

They aren’t alone, though. In fact, there’s a total of seven pilots in his family – talk about keeping a tradition running.

But, there was a very special picture of Captain Flowers and his son in the cockpit, taken almost 30 years before that moment that held a very special place in his heart

To celebrate, the pair recreated the picture

Warning: this will pull on your heartstrings.

To celebrate the Captain’s retirement, the pair recreated the picture they took in the cockpit. Only this time, they were both wearing a pilot’s uniform in what proved to be a full circle moment for all involved.

Southwest Airlines

The airline that had employed the retiree had nothing but good things to say about the man who’d inspired an entire flying dynasty.

“We’re grateful for Captain Ruben’s years of service and excited for his family’s legacy to continue at Southwest. We recently honored and celebrated Captain Ruben’s retirement flight, Flight #2601, from Omaha, Neb., to Chicago (Midway),” Southwest Airlines said.

How wholesome is that?

Next time you’re on a plane, maybe take a moment to consider you could be part of a pilot’s final or even first ever flight, making history.
