Even Ford’s fastest Mustang just got dusted by two Corvettes at the Nürburgring

Ford’s fastest Mustang just had its big Nürburgring moment.

Then a couple of Corvettes showed up and changed the conversation.

The legendary track in Germany has a way of humbling even the quickest cars.

And this week, the American muscle rivalry got a new twist.

Corvette takes the top American spots from Ford’s fastest Mustang

Chevy turned up to the Green Hell with a three-car lineup: the C8 Z06, ZR1, and new hybrid ZR1X.

The results? A shakeup for the American leaderboard.

The ZR1 clocked 6:50.763 and the ZR1X went even quicker at 6:49.275 – both faster than the Mustang GTD’s 6:52.072.

Those numbers drop the Corvettes into rare company. Only hypercars like the AMG ONE and a couple of track-focused Porsches have ever gone faster there.

And Chevy did it without turning the cars into race specials – just the standard safety kit: a roll hoop, fire extinguisher, six-point harness, and race seat.

The ZR1X barely beat the ZR1 despite packing 186 extra horses thanks to its hybrid system.

Extra weight is the real culprit here – the hybrid hardware adds bulk, which makes it harder to claw back seconds in tight corners and under braking.

Straight-line speed is brutal, but on a 12.9mi track full of elevation changes, physics still wins a few battles.

Even so, the ZR1X’s time cements both cars as the quickest American machines ever to lap the Nürburgring.

Maybe the most interesting part: no pro drivers.

Chevy handed the keys to its own engineers – Brian Wallace, Aaron Link, and Drew Cattell – the same team that designed, tuned, and obsessed over these cars, and now got to show exactly what they could do on track.

Getting there wasn’t simple.

Three months of planning went into tire warmers, post-lap engine cooling, and weather watching to make sure each car hit the track in perfect conditions.

Chevrolet

The whole effort is captured in Homegrown Speed: A Corvette Story, Chevy’s behind‑the‑scenes doc that follows the cars, the engineers, and the chaotic prep that led to their record laps.

And if this feels like the final form of the C8 platform, insiders say it isn’t. Which means the next chapter in the Ford vs. Chevy rivalry might be even quicker… and louder.

The Mustang GTD still holds its place in the hall of fame – sub-seven-minute laps at the Nürburgring don’t come easy – but now, two Corvettes are wearing the crown, and the battle for America’s fastest lap is officially back in gear.
