Driver questions whether the ‘white truck theory’ really does lead to better parking spots

Here’s what happened when a US motorist – and white truck driver – attempted to use the white truck theory when it came to finding a good parking spot.

Picture the scene, you’re out to do a bit of shopping but as you make your way there, you’re met with a completely full parking lot.

After driving around for the best part of half an hour, you eventually admit defeat and drive off in search of an alternative parking arrangement. Annoying, right?

But one white truck driver thinks he’s discovered a parking hack that actually works.

What is the white truck theory when it comes to parking?

There are few things as frustrating to motorists as a completely packed parking lot full of cars – and it’s set to get even more common as modern cars are rapidly outsizing traditional parking spaces.

Over in China, some smart engineers came up with this super cool vending machine-style parking setup that allows cars to be stacked vertically.

However, for those of us in the rest of the world, the struggle is real.

Unless you happen to be the owner of a white truck, or so the white truck theory goes.

According to the popular theory, white truck drivers don’t have to stress about finding an empty space – they can simply find the designated contractors’ area and park up there.

As most contractors use basic white trucks, the theory suggests a non-contractor white truck will blend in seamlessly and won’t result in a parking ticket.

But we’re not sure we’d risk this one – it could be a pretty pricey mistake to make.

One motorist decided to test the theory

But, TikTok user Jye did give it a go – and he claimed it worked like a charm.

“I drive a white truck, so I look like a contractor,” he said in a clip shared on the platform.

“There’s no parking where I was going, but there was available contractor parking.

“So, does my white truck fit in with the other contractors? And do I not get ticketed or towed?”

At this point, Jye headed into the parking lot and turned the camera to show his white truck sitting neatly alongside a similar-looking white truck.

He walked towards the truck and gave it a quick once-over to check if he had been given a ticket and when he saw that he hadn’t he declared it a win for white truck theory.

Offering his advice for those who hate being left without a parking spot, he added: “I guess buy a white truck and just park it wherever you need to be because people will assume you’re a contractor.”
