The Autobahn is the world-famous highway system found in Germany.

It is famed for inspiring the US Interstate Highway System following the end of World War Two.

But it is most famous for having sections of road with no restrictive speed limit at all.

One driver going at 199mph found out the hard way that not all of the Autobahn has no speed limit.

Driver caught driving at a seriously high speed

A driver going 199mph has found himself in big trouble on the Autobahn.

The report, originally from the Associated Press, is extremely interesting indeed.

According to the report, the incident in question took place in Magdeburg – around two hours west of Berlin.

Officers from the Magdeburg division reportedly clocked a driver doing an unbelievable speed.

The speed gun reportedly caught the driver in question driving at 199mph on the Autobahn.

On some sections of the Autobahn, that speed would be perfectly legal – if still questionable.

Unfortunately for the driver in question, this speed was done in a 74.5mph zone.

If we break the old calculator out, that equates to driving 124.5mph over the speed limit.

So, what punishment does one even receive for being able to drive more than 100mph over the speed limit?

It turns out that the answer is a $1,043 fine, as well as two points on his driving license – oh, and a driving ban of three months.

Police in Magdeburg didn’t offer any specifics on what the car in question was that the driver was using.

Given the speed of 199mph, we can safely assume that it was a supercar of some description.

Germany’s Autobahn inspires the US system today

Germany’s Autobahn system actually comes with a wealth of history behind it.

Despite being most commonly associated with the Third Reich, it was actually conceived by the Weimar government.

Unfortunately, the project never got far during the Weimar era of government.

The Nazi party, however, jumped on the idea – mostly due to the propaganda appeal.

Adolf Hitler made the construction of the Autobahn a central theme to his regime.

During the Allied invasion into Germany, the Americans remarked at the efficiency and craftsmanship of the system.

Future President Dwight D. Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.

When he became President, Eisenhower used the Autobahn as direct inspiration for the US Interstate Highway System.

If you ever plan on experiencing the Autobahn for yourself – keep in mind that not all of it is free for you to pin the accelerator pedal.
