The carmaker behind the BYD Dolphin is designing its cars with the ocean in mind, and there are a few reasons for why it makes sense.

Aside from the Atto 3, whose name derives from the electrifying and energy-sparking attosecond, the models in BYD’s range are all named after aquatic creatures.

We have the Seal, Sealion, Shark, and of course, the Dolphin.

The aquatic influences run much deeper than just the names, too.

BYD Dolphin is swimming in aquatic influences

The BYD Dolphin is the flagship car in the Chinese EV maker’s ‘Ocean series’, a range of marine-inspired vehicles that have made a major splash across Europe.

So much so that the manufacturer is now the highest-selling brand in the continent, and its latest model, the Seagull, has surged in sales thanks to its extremely affordable price.

The aquatic theme continues beyond the names, too.

The Dolphin’s exterior actually has subtle references to its namesake.

It has a fin on the roof, lights inspired by the curved body of a leaping dolphin, and lines on the bodywork that mimic the ripple effect of the amphibian gliding through water.

The theme continues on the inside too, with handles that are designed after the dolphin’s flippers.

It also has water droplet-looking vents and wave lines on the dash.

BYD to roll out ground-breaking charging ports

BYD is very much a leading brand when it comes to sustainability on a global scale.

Not only are they mass-producing healthy EVs, but the infrastructure that comes with the electric vehicle revolution is seeing BYD roll out ground-breaking charging ports that shame those made by Tesla and other competitors.

So it only makes sense that the Ocean series takes inspiration from the single biggest self-sustaining thing in the world: water.

“The ocean, with its vast energy potential, serves as a reminder of the importance of harnessing resources efficiently,” BYD said in a blog post.

As for the BYD Dolphin specifically, the hatchback leans into the renowned intelligence and communication skills of the beloved animals.

While it may now have been eclipsed, back in 2021 when it first launched, the Dolphin boasted one of the most advanced yet budget software and infotainment systems, combining affordability, sustainability, and luxury.
