With EVs becoming more and more popular, charging needs and costs have become a hot topic.

In an attempt to keep up with the growing demand, Tesla has released as many Superchargers as possible, but the infrastructure is still a work in progress.

And in California, one man has been left aghast by the prices of the public charging stations.

California man stunned at Tesla Supercharging costs

Tesla Supercharging stations have proved invaluable for EV drivers, zapping life into their cars and getting people back on the road in a matter of minutes.

But it’s not without its cost – and lengthy queues.

Unless it’s a home kit, which comes with its own financial implications, the prices of using a Supercharger aren’t quite as friendly as you might imagine.

In California, YouTuber DennisCW broke down the prices of charging his Tesla Model X, and he was left shocked.

The charging prices depended on the time, coming in at 37 cents per kWh between 4-8 AM, 45 cents between 8 AM and 12 AM, and as low as 21 cents between 12-4 AM.

But after pulling up just after 8 AM and being charged at the max 45 cents, the Model X was juiced up from 11 percent to a full battery.

In the 30-minute session, the Supercharger cost a whopping $32.90, gaining 251 miles of range.

“Hopefully, if you’re a Tesla owner, you’re not Supercharging every single day,” he said.

How to keep charging costs low

Tesla slows down the charging speeds after 80 percent battery capacity, and suggests drivers take advantage of that by unplugging and moving on at that point.

This dramatically reduces costs.

This YouTuber revealed that was the case for him because at the 80 percent mark, he had been been charged just over $25.

While that is still expensive, the final 20 percent proved quite costly.

Still, the Superchargers have a fantastic reputation, especially when you’re in a rush.
