Carlee and Robert were looking for a car online when they came across the 1975 BMW 2002.

They took a chance on it, paid $16,000 and headed down to San Diego to collect it.

Now, months later, their car is the personification of class.

How this California couple ended up with a vintage BMW from Mexico

Back in November 2024, Carlee and Robert, who live in Los Angeles, were in the market for a new car.

Originally Robert was leaning towards a Porsche but a listing on Facebook Marketplace got Carlee’s attention.

A 1975 BMW 2002 was going for sale for $16,000 and the couple took a chance on it, not being sure what the condition would be.

“We bought it from a guy in Mexico,” Carlee, 31, said.

“We met him in San Diego and we were crossing our fingers.

“But everything was good, it was running, and we were able to drive it from San Diego to LA without any issues.”

That was short-lived however, as a visit to a supposedly reputable shop seemed to bring out some problems.

“I think they probably did something with our alternator because that went out right after we took it to that place,” Carlee recalled.

“But besides that, it’s just an old car you know.

“It runs now, so that’s good.”

Anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of this beautiful car can see the couple cruising around Los Angeles on most days.

But for anyone not in the City of Angels, Carlee is keen to document the Bimmer’s journey on TikTok and Instagram.

Carlee runs a business called Love & Vintage, through which she sells curated vintage items.

Through social media, the BMW has become part of her brand.

“We’ve gotten really good reactions,” Carlee said.

“It’s fun creating the content for it. A lot of people are drawn, they’re just like ‘wow’.”

“People will comment on our TikTok to say ‘my sister had this car back in the day’.

“One guy was like ‘because of your post, I ended up buying a car off Facebook Marketplace’.”

However, as things stand, Robert is the only one out of the two who drives the car.

“I can’t drive because it’s stick,” Carlee explained.

“I sit passenger princess and document on the camera.

“Everyone keeps asking me ‘when are you going to try and learn?’, that’s down the line.”

In addition to appearing all over social media, the couple have made the vintage BMW available to rent for weddings, movies, music videos, and other events.

So you may be seeing this BMW on a movie screen near you in the future.

Buying a car from Facebook Marketplace can be an interesting experience

People are buying cars from Facebook Marketplace more and more these days.

We won’t give an opinion on whether or not this is a good thing, but we will say this – it’s an interesting experience.

One guy hit the jackpot when he scored a cheap manual Porsche 911 Turbo from there, whilst another was left dealing with a tricky Range Rover.

Some truly iconic cars make their way on there too, like this open-cockpit Lamborghini Gallardo or this thrust-propelled Pontiac Fiero GT.

Caution is advised when buying from there – but it has worked out for people in the past.

Like Robert and Carlee.
