The test began with all six electric SUV models with only 15kWh of battery which is like the equivalent of starting the race with a quarter-tank of gas.

The test route included simulated highways, school zones, and traffic lights so people would know how the electric SUVs operated on a regular day.

The contestants included a Jaguar I-Pace, Porsche Macan EV, a Mercedes EQE SUV, BMW iX (i40), a Cadillac Kyriq AWD and a Tesla Model Y.

Driving six premium EVs until they die to see how long they last

These Calgary men decided it was time to truly test the extent of six premium EVs‘ range to see how they would fare being driven to death in a normal real-life environment.

Out of all the cars, a Jaguar I-Pace, Porsche Macan EV, BMW iX (i40), a Mercedes EQE SUV, a Tesla Model Y and a Cadillac Kyriq AWD, the Jaguar I-Pace had the oldest technology, whereas the Porsche Macan EV was brand-new and hi-tech.

The conditions of the race were meant to be those of real life, with simulated highways, school zones, and traffic lights.

Driving conditions were kept fair with the same speeds, no slipstreaming, and rotating the lead position.

Who won?

The first to die in the race was the Jaguar I-Pace and it was also the hardest to restart after it completely ran out of battery, it had to be flat towed and fixed at a shop.

The Jag was followed, surprisingly, by the Porsche Macan EV and it’s brand new technology.

It did have a useful ‘backup mode’ giving it 200 foot to move.

Third to die was the Mercedes EQE which the power faded completely but stayed on until towing help arrived.

In bronze position was the BMW iX and it was super easy to tow and restart the same day. Silver position went to the Cadillac Lyriq which required a diagnostic test at the dealership to reawaken it.

In first place was the Tesla Model Y, which, despite going from full power to zero with no warning, stayed running for the longest.

Each of the EVs put on an impressive display considering their low battery states and proved that hypermiling with EVs is just as doable as with gas cars.
