BYD Song Plus survives lightning – not once, not twice, but three times
So, how on Earth did a BYD Song Plus EV survive a triple lightning strike?
This particular story comes to us from the Tieshan service area in Guangxi, China.
The footage, which you can see above, shows a BYD Song Plus EV pulling up to the service area.
It then suffers a rapid-fire, one-two lightning strike directly to the roof of the car.
What is interesting is that it turns out that lightning actually can strike twice.
Because the BYD Song Plus then gets hit with a second one-two punch from the sky.
Unbelievably, a third double jab of lightning strikes the rooftop of the car in quick succession.
The lightning strikes created visible electrical arcs with each impact on the vehicle.
According to reports, an intense examination revealed no short-circuiting at all.
In fact, the vehicle’s power battery pack, electric control unit, and motor were all intact.
The three main components of this EV all managed to perfectly survive a triple lightning strike.
How did this car survive a direct hit from the sky?
You’re probably asking yourself one main question – how the hell did the BYD Song Plus survive?
Experts quoted by Sanyan Tech explained how the BYD Song Plus managed to survive.
The experts explained that the interior of a sealed, metal-bodied car offers a relatively safe haven during a lightning strike.
This is achieved due to a phenomenon called the ‘Faraday cage’ effect.
When lightning hits the vehicle, the electrical current is conducted along the metal body to the ground.
Those inside remain safe because they are at the same electrical potential as the car itself, preventing electrocution.
We’ve heard of lightning not striking twice – but three times?
