BMW M is making an electric version of the BMW M3.

It’ll look the same as the ‘standard’ M3, but it’ll be faster.

Presumably, it’ll be a lot more expensive, too.

We’ll find out more when it debuts a couple of years from now.

What we can expect from the electric M3

The BMW M3 will be available with an electric drivetrain and, if everything goes to plan, it’ll be here in 2027.

This is a moment EV fans have been looking forward to for a long time, and a moment that hardcore purists have been dreading, presumably in equal measure, for a while.

But no matter, BMW will make it, and we only know two things for certain, for now.

BMW M

The first thing we know is the new M3 EV will be faster off the line than its gas-powered counterpart.

This is not particularly surprising because we know that, pound for pound, an EV is almost always faster than an equivalent vehicle when it comes to 0-60 or 0-124mph times.

The way the Cybertruck can be seemingly beat everything, from a Lamborghini Aventador to a Porsche 911, in a drag race is a constant reminder of that.

The other thing we know for sure is it’ll be expensive.

The M3 isn’t exactly the cheapest car in the world to begin with, and an electric version can only be even more expensive.

What the future holds for the BMW M3

BMW M

BMW said the future looks bleak for manual gearbox lovers, but the company hasn’t (yet) joined the bandwagon of brands that say they’ll give up internal combustion altogether.

But, like very nearly every other company in the world, BMW did say it’ll build more EVs in the future.

No model is exempt, including of course the M3.

The arrival of an electric M3 should not kill the gas M3, at least not immediately.

Fingers crossed.
