Movie fans everywhere will be very familiar with Audi.

The German marque has had a consistent, subtle presence in the Marvel universe for a while.

Audi was extremely smart in using the MCU to build its luxury legacy.

It’s all thanks to one quick-thinking marketing genius.

2008 was a very important year for movie fans all over the world.

That year saw the release of the blockbuster hit Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.

Not only did that film revive Robert Downey Jr’s career, but it also created something bigger.

It served as the origin point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

And Audi was there to put itself at the epicentre of the billion-dollar universe.

Audi was actually very clever in its approach, because it recognised the potential impact of the movie.

Despite now being revered for its supercar prowess, Audi’s R8 actually went a little under the radar when first released in 2006.

The German marque desperately wanted to reinvent its image to the masses.

And Iron Man presented an open-goal of an opportunity.

In the first movie, the R8 almost plays as much of a starring role as Tony Stark himself.

The shot of Stark sweeping down the California coast is one of the most iconic car scenes in recent Hollywood memory.

Loren Angelo, Audi of America’s Head of Marketing, was responsible for the genius idea.

In an interview with Automotive News, Angelo explained how he reinvented Audi’s image through the MCU.

“Back when we read the script for the first Iron Man, he was someone who was self-made. He utilized technology and a certain level of personal intelligence to create great things.”

“That was a perfect fit for Audi because that’s exactly what we’ve done with our brand.”

Since 2008, the German giants have continued to be a constant, on-screen presence within the MCU.

For one thing, the R8 has remained an ever-present feature of the Iron Man series of films.

The Audi SQ7, TT, A4 and A7 Sportback have also all featured across the movies, especially in Captain America: Civil War.

It just goes to show that recognising potential early can completely change a brand’s image – almost overnight.
